Brighten laundry, disinfect bathrooms and kill germs with this toxin-free DIY bleach alternative.
It’s easy to forget that cleaning products are often laden with bleach and other harmful ingredients. Although bleach is efficient at sanitizing and removing stains, its use can cause respiratory problems, skin issues, and allergic reactions. Bleach is also harmful to the environment – its harmful by-products can take years to break down. For an eco-friendly cleanser free of perfumes and dyes, try this homemade bleach replacement that you can mix together in just five minutes.
Hydrogen peroxide is the base of this DIY recipe. It’s an earth-friendly alternative to bleach that helps to lift stains while deodorizing and removing bacteria. Water is used to dilute the peroxide to a gentle detergent, and essential oils are added for a fresh scent. Note: Since it’s not as strong as regular bleach, a general rule of thumb is using about twice as much as you normally would.

To make this natural cleanser, combine 3 cups of water with 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a 32-ounce quart container or jug. Add 6 drops of your favorite essential oils. I used a mix of rose and lavender, but feel free to experiment with your favorite scents. Then, use it to clean sinks, sanitize bathtubs, and brighten your laundry!
To use as a toilet cleaner: Pour ½ cup of the solution into the toilet bowl. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then scrub clean.
For tough stains: Pre-soak clothes in 2 cups of the solution for up to 30 minutes, then wash as usual.
