Give your underactive thyroid a boost with these two variations of the yoga breathing exercise Breath of Fire.
Hypothyroidism is when you have an underactive thyroid gland, and it can be a frustrating condition to have. You might experience weight gain, fatigue, puffiness, constipation, and more feelings of sluggishness.
While certain medications can help to keep symptoms under control, it’s essential that you deal with the root of the problem. Exercise, diet, and lifestyle choices can all help your thyroid to produce more hormones and get your metabolism up and running again.

If you’re looking for simple and approachable hypothyroidism exercises, look no further than yoga. Yoga is essential for thyroid balance because it includes physical postures and breathing exercises that stimulate the reflex pathways of the throat. This activates the thyroid gland, thus bringing thyroid hormone production back into balance and regulating the metabolism.
The Breath of Fire is a popular yogic breathing practice. It’s great as a hypothyroidism exercise because it is stimulating, energizing, and helps to get the metabolism fired up. There are two great ways to practice this breathing exercise in order to give your thyroid a reboot.
Note: These breathing exercises for the thyroid should not be practiced by those who are pregnant or have high blood pressure.
Give your underactive thyroid a reboot by practicing these two versions of the Breath of Fire every day.
Breath of Fire | 60 breaths
This basic version of Breath of Fire acts as a simple breathing exercise for hypothyroidism.
- Find a comfortable seated position. You can sit crossed-legged or kneel on your shins and sit your hips back onto your heels or a yoga block.
- Place your palms on your belly and sit up tall. Take a sharp, one-second exhale through your nose and at the same time, feel your belly snap inwards.
- Your inhale will be passive, like a rebound of that very sharp exhale. Continue breathing sharp exhales and passive inhales, focusing on the snapping in of the belly as you exhale.
- Do 20 rounds, then find a natural breath for about 30 seconds.
- Repeat the cycle for a total of 3 rounds.
Twisting Breath of Fire | 60 breaths
This variation of breath adds a twist to reboot the metabolism and the thyroid.
-
- Remain in your comfortable seated position and sit up tall. If you were sitting crossed-legged, switch the crossing of your legs. Clasp your hands together in front of your chest.
- Inhale as you twist to the left. Then, take a sharp one-second exhale through your nose as you twist to the right and, at the same time, feel your belly snap inwards. Your inhale for this variation should be a little bit more vigorous.
- Continue twisting side to side with your inhales and sharp exhales, focusing on snapping in your belly as you exhale.
- Do 20 rounds, then find a natural breath for about 30 seconds.
- Repeat the cycle for a total of 3 rounds.
