This holiday classic gets a Paleo twist with the help of maple syrup, peppermint, and whipped coconut cream. Rich in chocolaty flavor, it’s packed with antioxidants, natural sweetness, and soul-soothing warmth.
This recipe uses antioxidant-rich cacao powder to softly merge with the rich taste and nutritious properties of coconut milk. Both are great Paleo alternatives for keeping this drink dairy-free and low in sugar. The ultimate delight is the velvety coconut cream on top, whipped to frothy perfection.

To make this recipe, combine the coconut milk, cacao, maple syrup, peppermint, and vanilla in a medium saucepan. Set the heat to medium-low and stir regularly for eight minutes. Just before the mix begins to boil, remove from the heat and divide between three glasses. Top with coconut cream, mint leaves, and grated chocolate for a decadent delight.
Tip: You can store the leftovers in the fridge for up to two days and reheat to serve. If you prefer something more refreshing, you can also enjoy it chilled.

- Medium mixing bowl

Ingredients
- 3 cups coconut milk
- 3 T cacao powder
- 1 T maple syrup
- 1/2 t vanilla extract
- 1/4 t peppermint extract
- 1 can coconut cream (refrigerated overnight)
- 2 T of grated dark chocolate
- 10 fresh mint leaves
Instructions
- Pour the milk, cacao, maple syrup, peppermint extract, and vanilla into a medium saucepan. Simmer on medium-low for 8 minutes, stirring regularly with a whisk.
- Turn off the heat just before boiling and divide the mixture evenly into 3 cups.
- In a medium mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the coconut cream so that it’s nice and frothy. Start with medium speed and work your way to high speed.
- Top the hot chocolate with whipped coconut cream, grated dark chocolate, and mint leaves. Serve warm and enjoy!
