Spending hours in the sun during the warmer months can often leave hair dull and straw-like. Salt water, heat and the sun’s rays are a recipe for fried strands after a day at the beach. With these two unique hairsprays, you can naturally protect hair before stepping into the sun and ensure your strands will be just as beautiful as your beach glow.

Zinc oxide is a popular mineral in cosmetics and sunscreens that naturally reflects the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. But the zinc oxide must be a high quality, non-nano zinc oxide to avoid entering the bloodstream through the skin or inhalation. Although the verdict is still out whether this is dangerous to one’s health, it is best to opt for non-nano zinc oxide. As an added bonus, zinc has been found to calm skin ailments like rosacea and even acne by reducing inflammation.
Zinc’s natural skin soothing properties explain why it is widely used in diaper rash creams. It also creates a barrier on the skin allowing for healing and repelling water. The first sun protecting spray uses zinc oxide along with distilled water and moisturizing argan oil to create a safe and effective scalp and hair protecting spray. Shake before each use to combine the oil, zinc and water. Always wear a safety mask or pull shirt over nose and mouth when working with zinc oxide to avoid inhaling. This spray creates an SPF of around 15, but be sure to reapply regularly – especially after swimming.
The second spray uses aloe vera and avocado oil to coat hair, creating a barrier from chlorine and natural sun protection. Because of its high concentration of monounsaturated fats, avocado oil has an SPF of 4-15. Funnel ingredients into a spray bottle and spray hair before going out in the sun, paying special attention to the scalp. Pro Tip: Never use citrus oils in sun-related products as they exaggerate the effects of the sun and cause a sunburn-like reaction on the skin (known as phototoxicity). Pack your bag with these two essential hairsprays and hit the beach!
