A decadent dark chocolate milkshake that rivals any diner malt shake you can find.
Rich dark chocolate blended into a lusciously creamy, decadent milkshake that rivals any diner shake you can dream up—bet you didn’t expect that to be Paleo. Lucky you, this shake is 100 percent Paleo-friendly, vegan, and gluten-free. With a handful of ingredients and a good blender, you can enjoy this indulgent dessert in minutes.
Coconut cream is what makes this milkshake so creamy without any dairy. Chilled, the cream is so thick it’s basically vegan whipped cream. If you don’t have access to coconut cream—which is coconut meat stewed in water—chilled coconut milk drained from its liquid will work, too.
Be sure to use a good quality dark chocolate—70 percent and up—to minimize the sugar content and reap the most antioxidants and health benefits from the treat. Lots of good dark chocolate brands are dairy-free, so check the ingredients.
Frozen bananas help to thicken the shake and make it extra creamy, plus their flavor balances well with dark chocolate and coconut. Other fruit variations would also make for a tasty dessert. Adding in frozen strawberries would make for a great dark chocolate-covered strawberry flavor, while other frozen berries would be delicious, too. Coconut flakes would add texture and flavor.
One tablespoon of honey proved perfectly sweet for us, making for an uber-rich and chocolatey shake. Maple syrup or your preferred Paleo-friendly sweetener would work just fine in place of honey, so feel free to customize.
If you’re like us, you’ll top this with an extra dollop of coconut cream (you can whip some sweetener into the cream if you’d like) and a fruit garnish. This recipe makes a cup-size serving—it’s so rich, you won’t need more than that—but feel free to double it or triple it if you’re sharing.
