Here in Southern California it’s officially cherry season. Walking through the produce section in our local market I can’t help but come home with a bag or two of sweet, dark cherries. In the past, one of my favorite things to do with fresh, local cherries was to turn it into a sweet, sticky sauce to serve over ice cream, cottage cheese and chocolate cake.
Since turning paleo, I wondered if there was a healthier way to make cherry sauce, one that didn’t involve a bunch of refined sugar. After a little experimenting, I came up with this recipe that calls for coconut crystals and arrowroot starch instead of cans sugar and cornstarch. It turned out just as tasty as the original.

- Serve it over Pork Chops. Use this recipe, just replace the apple & onion topping with Awesome Cherry Sauce.
- Serve it over tender chicken breasts. To cook the most tender chicken breast rinse and pat dry 2-4 organic chicken breasts. Season the chicken with salt and pepper then place in a slow cooker. Pour organic chicken or veggie broth into the slow cooker until it just covers all the chicken. Set it to cook on low for 6 hours. When the time is up simply take the chicken out of the broth, and viola, you’ve got perfectly tender chicken to serve your Awesome Cherry Sauce over.
- Serve on some grain-free waffles. Try this recipe.
- Rub a Real Healthy Tortilla with almond butter and roll it with a spoonful of Awesome Cherry Sauce.
- Make a pie, using the pecan and date crust from this recipe and Awesome Cherry Sauce as your pie filling.

Awesome Cherry Sauce
Ingredients
- ½ cup coconut crystals
- ¼ cup arrowroot starch
- 1 cup filtered water
- 4 cups fresh, pitted cherries
- ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
How To Make It:
- In a medium saucepan combine the coconut crystals and arrowroot starch. Add the water and cherries. Cook and stir over medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Remove from heat.
- Serve warm or cooled to room temperature. Cover and chill any leftovers in the fridge.
