Social media is rampant right now with glorious pictures of rose-shaped avocado slices. Luckily, it’s easy to transform your next avocado into a work of art! Here’s how to do it.
First, you are going to need some avocados. Ripe—but not too ripe—is what you are looking for. We aren’t making guacamole here, so you definitely don’t want avocados that are too soft. Avocados that are too hard will be very difficult to peel and won’t want to bend as you roll them into the rose shape. Look for avocados that are soft when you squeeze them and still a bit firm. I highly recommend purchasing 2-3 avocados so you can practice making your avocado rose.
Slice your avocado in half and remove the pit and skin. Using a sharp knife, hold onto the avocado and make very thin slices. If your avocado is too sticky, rub a little bit of olive oil on your knife to help it glide easier. Discard the end pieces of the avocado as they tend to be hard to roll. Next, use your fingers to gently fan out the avocado slices so they are still touching but are positioned in a long, uniform line.
Gently begin to roll one end of the avocado slices into a sort of spiral. This part can be tricky and the avocado slices may want to come apart. Go slowly and be patient. It is important to note that no two roses will be exactly the same. Small avocados will result in a smaller rose while larger avocados will have more petals and be larger. Once you reach the end, you can adjust slices to have a more compact or a more spread-out flower shape.
Voilà—a stunning and delicate rose that’s completely edible (and healthy!) Next, it is time to present your piece of art. Use your avocado rose to adorn the top of salads, on sweet potato toast or all by themselves with a little sea salt and black pepper.
How to Slice an Avocado Into a Rose
- 2-3 avocados
- Begin by slicing avocado in half lengthwise. Remove pit and peel off skin.
- Place avocado cut-side down and make very thin slices in it. Gently fan out slices using fingers.
- Tuck the end as you wrap the avocado around. Continue until you reach the end of the avocado. Repeat with the other half of avocado.
- Place avocado slices on Paleo toast, salad or any recipe you want to give a stylish finish.
Tip: Be sure to serve your avocado rose right away or squeeze a little lime juice on top to help prevent browning.
